HogNation.net announced that Jarrett Gardner has been named the 2004 Minor League Player of the Year, an honor given each year to the former Razorback player that accomplishes the most in minor league baseball. Former winners include Rodney Nye, Cliff Lee and Eric Hinske.
Jarrett spent the season at Augusta (A) but was called up for a spot start at Portland (AA) due to an injury. He pitched in his first AA game on June 9th and got the win. In total, he was 14-5 on the season, with 23 starts at Single A and 1 start at Double A. His combined ERA was 2.62 in 26 games. In 141.0 innings he struck out 94 batters and walked just 12, a 7.83 K to BB ratio.
Jarrett was named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for May 7-13 after going 2-0 with a 0.68 ERA in two starts and was named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for May 28-June 3 after going 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts. He was also named the 'Topps' South Atlantic League Player of the Month for May after going 4-0 in six games (four starts). Jarrett was a member of the South Atlantic League mid season All-Star Team. He was named HogNation Player of the Week six times in 2004.
The Red Sox selected Jarrett as Single-A Augusta's pitcher of the year. The 14 winners from throughout Boston's farm system were honored for their performances prior to the Red Sox-Devil Rays game at Fenway Park on September 15th.
Jarrett pitched at Arkansas for two seasons, 2002 & 2003.
