JUPITER -- When Greg Blum signed with the
Montreal Expos organization as a non-drafted free agent last year,
he didn't have to go far to learn about the organization.
All he had to do was ask his older brother Geoff, an infielder
with the Expos who is finishing up his second season in the big
leagues.
Greg is a catcher for the Class A Jupiter Hammerheads and dreaming
of joining his brother.
"It's fun (playing in the same organization)," Greg
said. "It's a good experience because he tells me what to
expect, what not to expect and how to go about things."
Greg, 23, was hitting .201 with three home runs and 18 RBI, while
committing one error going into Friday's game. He began the season
hurt but took over the bulk of the catching duties when Scott
Ackerman went on the disabled list.
Being the younger brother of a big leaguer has its advantages.
Greg said Geoff, 28, often has provided him with shoes and bats.
"I talk to him a lot. I try to call him at least three or
four times a week," Greg said. "He's someone to talk
to when I'm struggling. We just kind of talk back and forth, see
how things are going."
Hammerheads manager Tim Leiper has had a chance to coach both
brothers and said that he has noticed an improvement in Greg from
a year ago when he played for Class A Vermont.
"He does everything you can do to help you win games,"
Leiper said. "He's moved up the ladder quite a bit here because
of the way he's played."
