MLB Teams: Managed the Pittsburgh Pirates (1917-19)

Important Notes: Played fullback and second base at the University of Chicago...scouted for Pittsburgh before becoming their manager...took over half way through the 1917 season...managed Honus Wagner (1917) and Casey Stengel (1918-19)...team finished in fourth-place in 1918 and 1919...spent eleven years (1920-30) as the head baseball coach at Penn State University...he passed away on September 19, 1952....inducted into the Helms Foundation College Hall of Fame in 1960.

Important Stats: 166-187 (.470) at Pittsburgh...129-76-1 at Penn State.

Arkansas Notes: Head baseball coach from 1908-13...amassed an 81-37 (.686) record.

Strange but true: The only man ever to serve as a major league manager and a head coach in the NFL was a native of Prague, Czechoslovakia. Bezdek's family came to the U. S. when he was five years old and settled in Chicago.
