Razorback No-Hitters

Arkansas 21-33, Southwest Baptist 0-4

The Arkansas Razorback baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Southwest Baptist on Wednesday by 21-0 and 33-4.
In his first game of the season, sophomore Fred Faust pitched a
five-inning no-hitter in the first game. Catcher Phil Laws had two RBIs.
By the fifth inning, the score was 33-4, and Southwest Baptist forfeited the
rest of the game on the 10-run rule.
The Bolivar, Mo., team waved the 10-run rule in the second game.
Arkansas’ 33-4 victory set a team record for the Razorbacks, and set
another record with 32 hits.
Mike Bertotti, the designated hitter, led the attack in the second game with
six RBIs. Second baseman Jim Ward scored five runs.
Arkansas pitcher Rodney Sell took the win in the second game in which
almost every player in the game got a chance to play.
The Razorbacks are now 20-4 for the season.

Arkansas 10-2, Texas A&M 0-5

Arkansas’ Steve Parker pitched a no-hitter as the Razorbacks won the first
game of a Southwest Conference baseball double-header with Texas
A&M 10-0 on Saturday.
Jeff Schow had four hits and Mike Scanlin rapped three to lead Texas A&M
to a 5-2 victory in the second game. The Aggies used a three-run fourth
inning to break a 1-1 tie and g on to win the game for Texas A&M reliever
Pat Wernig. Maury Martin had an RBI groundout, Robi Chandler a
run-scoring single and Schow a triple to drive in a run in the fourth.
Parker’s performance in the opener was the first SWC no-hitter since the
Razorbacks’ Tim Deitz hurled one against Texas A&M in a seven-inning
game at College Station, Texas, in 1983. Parker’s ERA for the season is
0.25. Parker, 5-0, threw a one-hitter March 22 against Texas.
Ralph Kraus had two doubles and his fifth home run of the year for
Arkansas in the first game. Texas A&M starter Gary Geiger, 3-4, left the
game in the third after giving up seven runs to the Razorbacks.
Wernig improved to 4-1 with the second-game victory. Ray Harris, 3-1,
lasted seven innings for Arkansas and took the loss.
Texas A&M is 4-2 in the SWC and 23-16 overall. Arkansas fell to 5-4 in the
league and 23-10 for the season.

HOGS’ PITCHERS NO-HIT EVANGEL

Brian Cook and Brian Dennison combined for a no-hitter as Arkansas
defeated Evangel-Mo., 10-0, Tuesday night at Fayetteville, Ark., in a game
called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Cook (5-1) allowed only two runners in three innings, one on walk another
on a hit batter. Dennison got the save, his first.
The Razorbacks went up 2-0 in the first as Mark Johnson singled and
scored on a Bubba Carpenter sacrifice fly. Allen Williams doubled and
scored when Steve Taft struck out and reached on a passed ball.
Kirk Piskor hit a two-run triple in the third and scored on an error by
Evangel centerfielder Chuck Hepola. Scott Epps tripled in the fourth.
Arkansas is 26-13 and Evangel falls to 8-18.

Hogs’ Nye Hurls No-Hitter vs. ISU

Richie Nye penned another chapter in the improbable story of the 1996
Arkansas baseball season by pitching a no-hitter on Friday in the
Razorbacks’ 14-0 victory over Iowa State at George Cole Field.
Nye (2-0), who hails from Cameron, had 12 strikeouts and no walks and
came within one baserunner of a perfect game.
The victory upped Arkansas to a school-record 15-0 start. The Razorbacks
are just two victories away from tying the school record of 17 consecutive
victories, accomplished in 1985 and 1989.
The lone Cyclone baserunner came in the third when Ryan Harmon
chopped a ball in front of the plate and Razorback catcher Brad Mulvaney
hit Harmon in the back on the throw to first.
Although Nye didn’t need much help, the Razorbacks hammered Cyclone
preseason All-America pitcher Jeff Sebring for six runs before the Cyclone
ace was sent to the showers in the second. In all, the Razorbacks tagged
16 hits with freshman Ryan Lundquist leading the way with five RBIs.

HOGS’ ABBOTT TOSSES NO-HITTER AT VANDY

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Arkansas junior right-hander Todd Abbott pitched a
no-hitter Friday, the first complete game of his career, to help the
Razorbacks defeat Vanderbilt, 6-0.
Abbott struck out 15 as Arkansas (17-13 overall, 2-2 Southeastern
Conference) won for the second time on the road this season. The game
was played at Greer Stadium, home of the Triple-A Nashville Sounds.
It was the sixth loss in a row for Vanderbilt (14-10, 0-4).
“It feels great. I’m on cloud nine,” Abbott said. “In the sixth or seventh
inning, I felt strong and I felt I could go all the way.” Abbott had a perfect
game for 5 1/3 innings before he hit Commodores designated hitter Rick
West. The next batter, Jason Elliot grounded into a double play to help
Abbott face the minimum 18 batters though six innings.
Abbott faced one batter over the minimum in the game, hitting third
baseman Boomer Whipple in the eighth inning. Whipple had his 19-game
hitting streak end.
Abbott, 3-2, fell one strikeout short of tying the school record set by Warren
Hemm in 1976 against Southern Methodist when he struck out 16.
“I was setting them up with my fastball, and my curve was working all
night,” Abbott said.
It was Arkansas’ first nine-inning no-hitter since Steve Parker’s in 1986
against Texas A&M. The Razorbacks had a five-inning no-hitter against
Evangel in 1991.
Arkansas broke open the game in the third when it scored five runs on six
hits. The first six batters reached base on five hits and a hit batter.
The Hogs loaded the bases as the first three batters — David Skeels, Jeff
Parsons and Ty Bilderback — singled. Kenderick Moore was hit by a Rick
Giannola (3-2) pitch to score Skeels. Allen Williams then delivered with a
two-run double to left, scoring Parsons and Bilderback.
Bob Hughes drove in Moore for his league-leading 44th RBI. Williams
scored the fifth run on Doyle Preston’s single.
The Razorbacks added another run in the eighth as Kyle Harris singled
with one out and scored on a single by Steve Taft.
Arkansas and Vanderbilt meet at 1:30 p.m. today at McGugin Field on the
Vanderbilt campus. Scott Cunningham (4-1, 4.21) will pitch for Arkansas.
