HOGS' ABBOTT TOSSES NO-HITTER
AT VANDY
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Arkansas junior right-hander Todd Abbott pitched
a
no-hitter Friday, the first complete game of his career, to help
the
Razorbacks defeat Vanderbilt, 6-0.
Abbott struck out 15 as Arkansas (17-13 overall, 2-2 Southeastern
Conference) won for the second time on the road this season. The
game
was played at Greer Stadium, home of the Triple-A Nashville Sounds.
It was the sixth loss in a row for Vanderbilt (14-10, 0-4).
"It feels great. I'm on cloud nine," Abbott said. "In
the sixth or seventh
inning, I felt strong and I felt I could go all the way."
Abbott had a perfect
game for 5 1/3 innings before he hit Commodores designated hitter
Rick
West. The next batter, Jason Elliot grounded into a double play
to help
Abbott face the minimum 18 batters though six innings.
Abbott faced one batter over the minimum in the game, hitting
third
baseman Boomer Whipple in the eighth inning. Whipple had his 19-game
hitting streak end.
Abbott, 3-2, fell one strikeout short of tying the school record
set by Warren
Hemm in 1976 against Southern Methodist when he struck out 16.
"I was setting them up with my fastball, and my curve was
working all
night," Abbott said.
It was Arkansas' first nine-inning no-hitter since Steve Parker's
in 1986
against Texas A&M. The Razorbacks had a five-inning no-hitter
against
Evangel in 1991.
Arkansas broke open the game in the third when it scored five
runs on six
hits. The first six batters reached base on five hits and a hit
batter.
The Hogs loaded the bases as the first three batters -- David
Skeels, Jeff
Parsons and Ty Bilderback -- singled. Kenderick Moore was hit
by a Rick
Giannola (3-2) pitch to score Skeels. Allen Williams then delivered
with a
two-run double to left, scoring Parsons and Bilderback.
Bob Hughes drove in Moore for his league-leading 44th RBI. Williams
scored the fifth run on Doyle Preston's single.
The Razorbacks added another run in the eighth as Kyle Harris
singled
with one out and scored on a single by Steve Taft.
Arkansas and Vanderbilt meet at 1:30 p.m. today at McGugin Field
on the
Vanderbilt campus. Scott Cunningham (4-1, 4.21) will pitch for
Arkansas.
