Yankees outlast Royals in 14
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Bernie Williams singled
home the winning run in the 14th inning as the Yankees slipped
past the Royals, 3-2, Wednesday night at Kauffman Stadium.
Williams came up with two on and two out against Royals reliever
Blake Stein. The big hit by Williams followed singles by Alfonso
Soriano and Jason Giambi. The Yankees (74-44) won their fourth
straight against the Royals over the last week. Kansas City (48-72)
lost despite a rare straight steal of home by Mike Sweeney in
the sixth inning.
Ramiro Mendoza worked three innings and improved his record to
8-3, while Stein fell to 0-3. Mariano Rivera picked up his 26th
save.
The Yankees went on top in the opening inning as Giambi paid another
dividend on New York owner George Steinbrenner's big investment.
With two out and nobody on, Giambi turned on a Paul Byrd pitch
and drove it over the wall in right field for his 29th home run.
That 1-0 lead held up for a long time, as Byrd and Andy Pettitte
settled into a fast-paced pitching duel. The Royals had a chance
to get something done in the third after the first two were retired.
Neifi Perez singled and Carlos Beltran's blooper went off Soriano's
glove to set up a first-and-third situation. Pettitte got out
of the jam when Sweeney broke his bat and bounced into a forceout.
Kansas City finally forged a 1-1 tie in the sixth when Beltran
led off with a double down the left-field line and Sweeney produced
an RBI double to right. Joe Randa sacrificed Sweeney to third
and, after Kit Pellow fanned, Sweeney pulled off one of the surprise
plays of the year. Left-handed-hitting Aaron Guiel was at the
plate against the lefty Pettitte and behind in the count 1-2 when
Sweeney suddenly broke for home before Pettitte, who was pitching
from the stretch, started his delivery.
Sweeney, a slow runner who had only four steals all year, timed
his dash perfectly and slid to the front of the plate. By the
time catcher Jorge Posada accepted the throw home, he had to lunge
forward to make a tag. On a bang-bang play, home-plate umpire
Randy Marsh ruled that Sweeney had nicked the edge of the plate
just before Posada applied the tag. Sweeney's steal of home, which
put the Royals up 2-1, was the first for Kansas City since Randa
stole home on a double steal on May 10, 1999. It was Kansas City's
first straight steal of home since Fred Patek did it against Minnesota
on June 18, 1977.
The Yankees needed a Kansas City defensive miscue to bounce into
a 2-2 tie in the seventh. With one out and a runner at first,
Rondell White hit a bouncer to shortstop Perez in the hole. Perez
threw low to first and the ball rolled past Pellow, with the runners
winding up at second and third. A sacrifice fly by Shane Spencer
made it 2-2.
New York had a runner at third with two out in the ninth, but
Byrd got White on a bouncer to shortstop. Pettitte allowed two
runs and seven hits in his eight-inning stint. The Royals had
two on with two out in the ninth, but Perez flied out against
reliever Mike Stanton.
Byrd threw 122 pitches in his nine-inning stint. He allowed two
runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
