Craig Gentry named Hog Nation's 2009 Minor League Player of the Year

 

HogNation.net announced that Craig Gentry has been named the 2009 Minor League Player of the Year, an honor given each year to the former Razorback player that accomplishes the most in minor league baseball. Former winners also include Kit Pellow, Jay Sawatski, Scott Roehl, Cliff Lee and Eric Hinske, among others.

Gentry spent the season with the AA Frisco RoughRiders before being called up by the Texas Rangers on September 1. With Frisco he batted .303 with 8 home runs and 53 RBI. He set a Frisco record with 100 runs scored. He also had 49 stolen bases and was only caught 6 times.

Gentry was named the Texas Rangers Minor League Player of the Month for June, when he hit .364 and stole 13 bases. He was the Co-Player of the Week for the Texas League from July 6-12, a week in which he hit .440. He was also named the Texas Rangers Defender of the Month for July. Texas League managers voted Gentry the best base-runner in the Texas League this season.

Craig was first in the Texas League in stolen bases, fifth in average, fourth in triples, fourth in hits, and second in runs scored. He was named the Hogs in the Minors Player of the Week five times this season.

Gentry spent two seasons, 2005 and 2006, with the University of Arkansas. He hit .318 as a Razorback and stole 34 bases. Before that he played the 2004 season at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. The Van Buren native was drafted in the 10th round by the Texas Rangers in 2006.
