For Immediate Release
HogNation.net announced that Kit Pellow has been named the 2008 Minor League Player of the Year, an honor given each year to the former Razorback player that accomplishes the most in minor league baseball. Pellow was also the 2007 award winner and is the first to win the prize in consecutive years. Former winners also include Jay Sawatski, Scott Roehl, Cliff Lee and Eric Hinske, among others.
Kit returned to the Saraperos de Saltillo of the Mexican League (AAA) for this season and moved on to play for two independent teams at the conclusion of the Mexican League season, the Lincoln Saltdogs of the American Association and the Calgary Vipers of the Golden League.
He was the triple crown winner (.385 / 34 / 107) for the Mexican League, just the 6th player ever to accomplish that. For the three teams combined Kit hit .367, his on base percentage was .438 and he slugged .684. He had 33 doubles, 43 home runs and 138 RBI while scoring 118 runs in 137 games. Kit was also walked 59 times (10 intentionally) and was hit by 12 pitches.
Kit reached several career milestones in his 13th professional season. He got his 1,200th career hit on May 2. On July 12 he hit a grand slam to score his 800th career run and drive in his 900th career run. He also reached and surpassed 400 career home runs!
In a unique twist, Kit was also traded for himself this year. At the conclusion of Lincoln's season, he was traded to Calgary for cash and a player to be named later. At the end of Calgary's season, they traded Kit to Lincoln as the player to be named later in his own trade.
Kit was the Hogs in the Minors Player of the Week ten times.
Kit played two seasons at Arkansas, 1995-96. He hit .342 for the Hogs, along with knocking 19 home runs and driving in 121 runs. He earned All-SEC honors in 1995. Following his collegiate career the Kansas City native was drafted in the 22nd round by the Royals.
